July 15, 2023—Public historian Nancy Spannaus will address the noontime lecture series sponsored by the Treasury Historical Association on July 19. Her topic is How Alexander Hamilton Shaped Lincoln’s Economic Policy. The event will begin promptly at 12 noon Eastern Daylight time and last one hour.

In her 2019 book, Hamilton Versus Wall Street: The Core Principles of the American System of Economics, Spannaus devoted a full chapter to Abraham Lincoln’s career as an advocate of Alexander Hamilton’s economic policies. In this lecture, Spannaus will trace Lincoln’s adoption of Hamilton’s political economy, from his first declaration of candidacy for office, to his ultimately unfulfilled policies to heal the nation after the Civil War.
The Treasury Historical Association (THA) is a non-profit historic preservation and educational organization, devoted to preserving the history of the U.S. Treasury. Spannaus previously addressed the association in September 2020 on the topic of Alexander Hamilton, Founder of the American System. That presentation can be found on the THA website, and on the You Tube channel of the blog AmericanSystemNow.
Nancy Bradeen Spannaus has studied Alexander Hamilton since the 1970s. She co-edited a book of writings on The Political Economy of the American Revolution in 1977 which has circulated broadly; Worldcat currently lists it in 153 libraries worldwide. Her book Hamilton Versus Wall Street, self-published in 2019 and critically acclaimed by Kirkus Reviews, among others, has sold in more than 1500 copies to date.
Nancy publishes the blog americansystemnow.com, and lectures on American history at Long Island University, Frederick Community College, and Shepherd University. She is a member of the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society, and of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and a master’s degree from Columbia University in philosophy and social work, respectively.
