A Timely Event
The invitation to the meeting reads as follows:
Have you been taught that Alexander Hamilton was a tool of rich capitalists, a warmonger, and an anti-democratic elitist? Then you’ve been lied to. Come get the real story from Nancy Spannaus, author of Hamilton Versus Wall Street: The Core Principles of the American System of Economics, and learn how his principles built this country and are still relevant today.
Interest in Hamilton is surging once again, in the wake of the Disney company’s release of the film version of the Broadway play two weeks ago. Reports are that subscriptions to the Disney channel have skyrocketed, as millions seek access to a production that once required hundreds of dollars to see.
The surge is accompanied, of course, by a chorus of detractors, who are seeking to tar Hamilton with the racist, slave-holding brush. To do so, they not only have to damn him by his associations (his family and colleagues), but also ignore his documented history of advocating for bringing blacks into the Revolutionary army (while giving them their freedom), defending blacks from bounty hunters from the South seeking to send them back into slavery, and establishing a school for black children (enslaved and free) in New York City.
Most importantly, these detractors refuse to recognize that Hamilton’s economic policies were aimed to eliminate the slave economy, an objective that won him the eternal enmity of committed plantation moguls. I make the case in my blog post Hamilton’s Economics Aimed to End Slavery.
Spannaus’s book, in either soft cover or e-book, can be obtained through Amazon or the publisher, iuniverse.
